About Me

I am a Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Florida, with research interest in the area of steel structures. I have been painting as a hobby for over thirty years. My primary medium is watercolor, but I also work with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastel. My art education includes nothing formal, but lots of instruction in workshops, both in the U.S. and abroad.

I have also revived a 300-year old art form, now lost, called fore-edge painting, that is, painting on the edge of a book in a manner such that the painting is invisible until the pages are bent. There are no teachers for this, and no books, so I have taught myself by trying and failing. See my article in the Summer 2002 issue of Watercolor Magic.

I believe that watercolor is the perfect medium for an engineer. Executing a painting or designing and building a structure both require careful planning, good timing and rapid execution.
